For all volunteer opportunities, please complete the volunteer application and send it with your cover letter and resume and (for articling students only) to Andrea Del-Pan, Pro Bono Director, at probono@baylegal.org. Any law student enrolled at least part-time and having completed at least one semester of law studies may apply for voluntary internships at any time. First-year law students who have not yet completed their first semester can apply for volunteer placements after December 1. Part-time law students and candidates for a joint degree can also apply for voluntary internships. The Faculty of Law degree terminates eligibility for honorary positions, with the exception of law students who are enrolled at least part-time and do not practice law. Are you a non-lawyer or student passionate about social justice and expanding access to legal services for low-income communities? So consider joining VLJ as an administrative volunteer! While VLJ offers free legal services, much of the work involves interviewing clients, filling out paperwork, requesting files, scheduling appointments, and providing comprehensive support. As an administrative volunteer at VLJ, passionate individuals are paired with one VLJ client at a time to help them move forward with VLJ in their case. You may be asked to gather information from a customer, help them fill out forms, or collect and submit documents to VLJ. Experience required: No experience required, but a high level of confidentiality and commitment to vulnerable persons must be maintained. Access to free, high-quality legal services for low-income communities is extremely important, and VLJ needs all kinds of volunteers to help us live up to our motto of taking business. While volunteer lawyers provide VLJ clients with valuable legal advice and services, our clients and staff need help with so much more! Maybe you want to donate your time to work one-on-one with VLJ clients to help them manage paperwork, interpret for non-English speaking clients, or maybe you have a skill or passion you`d like to use to accelerate VLJ`s mission. As the largest provider of free civilian services in the San Francisco Bay Area, we rely on the support of hundreds of volunteers each year to help us fulfill our mission. Each year, more than 2,500 volunteer articling students work in U.S. judicial components and lawyers across the country. Approximately 1,000 articling students volunteer during the school year and approximately 1,500 during the summer. This support aims to help LSNV fulfill its mission of access to justice for those in need and underserved. Paralegals are expected to assist LSNV lawyers with client meetings, drafting legal documents, preparing court cases and conducting day-to-day litigation. Paralegal trainees must demonstrate an interest in LSNV`s public service mission. Time required: Varies (2 – 15 hours) per client; depends on the needs of the clients and the complexity of the legal issue.
Are you passionate about improving equal access to justice and speak a second (or third) language? Then consider joining VLJ as a bilingual volunteer! As the number of people using free legal services continues to grow and diversify, it is important to VLJ that we continue to meet everyone`s needs. VLJ is currently able to provide limited translation/interpreting services, but we need more help. Not only is navigating the legal system confusing, but VLJ clients are asked to provide very personal information so that we can provide them with the help they need. The opportunity to share their story with someone who speaks their native language is essential. Giving your time to interpret for non-English speakers looking for free legal aid with VLJ makes so much sense. Most U.S. judicial components and attorneys have early application deadlines, so interested law students should plan an application at least four to five months in advance. Do you have a passion for VLJ? Then become a fundraising/donor relations volunteer! Volunteers provide unlimited support to VLJ`s development team by writing letters to donors thanking them, raising funds by hosting an event, hosting in-person events, introducing VLJ`s mission to friends, sharing content on social media, or serving on the development committee. Each participating law firm conducts its legal internship program independently and has its own internal deadlines and requirements. Students must apply directly to any office that interests them. While application requirements vary, offices typically require a curriculum vitae, cover letter, and transcript from law school. Experience: No experience required, but must ensure a high level of confidentiality.
Articling Students: Legal interns assist lawyers in providing legal assistance to LSNV clients. This support aims to help LSNV fulfill its mission of access to justice for those in need and underserved. Legal interns assist LSNV lawyers with client meetings, conducting legal research, preparing legal documents, and creating process records. Articling students must be accredited law school students or unlicensed attorneys from Virginia and must show interest in LSNV`s public service mission. Interns must have strong multitasking skills, be proactive, interested in litigation, have strong interpersonal skills, and be sensitive to the needs of our clients. Northern Virginia Legal Services also requires non-lawyers to assist us in providing services to individuals in our service area. Experience required: No experience required, but must speak a language other than English, maintain a high level of confidentiality and advocate on behalf of vulnerable persons.
