If you come from a low-income household and can`t afford a lawyer, SLA may be able to help. We can provide legal representation and services in various areas. To find out if the SLA can help you resolve your legal issue, please read our practice areas. The clinic has limited resources and a specialized mandate and therefore accepts a small number of files. The clinic is one of many access to justice and legal reform initiatives in Alberta. Here is a list of other resources that may be able to help you. In the clinical portion of this course, you will work with students, faculty and clients to establish an admission and review process for false convictions. They may have the opportunity to participate in hearings before administrative tribunals, unlawful convictions, access to justice initiatives and/or public interest initiatives. Student Legal Assistance (SLA) is a pro bono legal clinic that provides legal information and representation to low-income residents of Calgary and surrounding areas. ALS has been in existence since 1979 and is a registered not-for-profit, not-for-profit organization comprised primarily of law students from the University of Calgary. Led by the Executive Director and led by a team of senior counsel, articling students are responsible for client onboarding and case management. while completing their doctoral training Juris full-time.
ALC`s student team of approximately 100 clerks also consists of an elected student leadership team led by the student director. In this course, you will work at the clinic on precedents affecting Alberta`s vulnerable communities and environment so that you can gain public interest advocacy and litigation skills. The clinic`s mission is to educate and inspire a new generation of lawyers to advocate for the public interest in Alberta and beyond. The Cumming School of Medicine Legal Research Services (CMS Legal) team provides the legal review of research-related contracts and agreements for researchers appointed to the Cumming School of Medicine. They examine and critically reflect on systemic barriers that prevent or impede access to justice. Through your research, you will develop hardware for SLA clerks. The practical aspect of this clinic includes your support in ALS`s public relations and access to justice efforts by providing public legal information and training seminars focused on the needs of marginalized clients. The BLG Corporate Clinic offers you the opportunity to work in entrepreneurship and business law. You will be matched with a start-up company that you can work with throughout the year. This is an opportunity for you to gain valuable experience in a variety of legal work such as drafting contracts and contracts. as well as work in the field of intellectual property, such as drafting patent applications and licensing agreements. During this program, you will be paired with a mentor-advocate who practices in the region and can provide you with experience and advice on all your questions. ALS student social workers can make advocacy, conduct court proceedings, and participate in dispute resolution, negotiation, and early resolution of cases for their clients. For those eligible for student legal aid, our articling students can provide legal information and representation.
Social workers also volunteer on-site for several Calgary organizations, including the Calgary Dream Centre, CUPS Calgary and Alpha House. Access to justice is a major societal concern, and this concern is even more pronounced in cases involving important issues of public interest. Barriers to accessing the justice system on matters of public interest come in many forms, including: In this clinic, you will investigate the causes of miscarriages of justice and critically examine criminal conviction trials in Canada and abroad. You will learn about the causes of false convictions, including errors in eyewitness identification, witness statements, false confessions, narrow-sightedness, systemic discrimination, forensic scientific errors, the impact of racism, gender bias and socio-economic factors, and professional or prosecutorial misconduct. By working with the Faculty of Law, Student Legal Aid (SLA) and lawyers working in the field, you will have the opportunity to gain experience and insight in an area generally considered complex and reserved for professional practitioners. Under this program, you will help clients resolve a variety of tax issues, including eligibility for Canada child tax benefits, medical expense credits and Employment Insurance obligations, Canada Pension Plan benefits, pension benefits and GST credits.
