Ruby Shellaway, Vice-Chancellor, General Counsel and Secretary of the University, has her office at 2100 West End Avenue, Suite 750. Our office works closely with Risk and Insurance Management and the Compliance Office. The General Counsel is accountable to the Office of the Board of Trustees of VU. The Office of Legal Affairs strives to respond quickly and efficiently to requests for legal advice, strategic advice and services. We are committed to excellence in VUMC`s legal representation. VUMC`s Office of Legal Affairs is VUMC`s principal legal advisor and is responsible for managing all legal matters of VUMC and its subsidiaries. The Office of Legal Affairs supports VUMC`s mission by ensuring that VUMC`s business affairs are conducted in accordance with ethical standards and existing laws and regulations and in a manner that avoids or mitigates unnecessary business and reputational risks. Renee received her bachelor`s degree in family life education from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, a master`s degree in marriage and family therapy from Abilene Christian University, and her paralegal certification with honors from Clayton State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Terry has extensive experience in database management and day-to-day program operations. During her time at Internal Audit, she created and managed the internal time tracking system, served as an administrator for the Internal Audit Server, and then worked in the corporate underwriting system. In addition to administering the program at OCOICM, she participated in the separation of the Conflict of Interest Disclosure System database and the Office of the General Counsel outside the legal resolution system during the transition from VU to VUMC.
She also worked on the transition of the Conflict Disclosure System interface from PeopleSoft to Oracle. In the Office of Risk Management, she managed the iVOS Claim Reporting and Veritas Incident Reporting systems in addition to the Protection of Minors application, and worked closely with the Oracle Business Intelligence reporting team to move POM reporting to Oracle-based business intelligence. Camille Steward, Divisional Counsel, provides legal support for labour and employment matters related to law interpretation, employee relations, disability and religious adjustments, medical leave, drug testing, background checks, labour relations and negotiations, and other workplace matters. She also advises VUMC on the legal implications of proposed policies and measures, employment-related contracts, and advises VUMC on compliance with federal and state laws and administrative regulations. She regularly works with outside counsel to defend class action against VUMC. It will also contribute to compliance with Title IX and the VUMC Centre for Paramedic Health Programs. Amy received her J.D. from Samford University`s Cumberland School of Law in 2000. Prior to joining VUMC, Amy was a partner at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, LLP, where she regularly represented regional and national hospitals and hospital systems, as well as other healthcare providers. Terry joins VUMC after working at Vanderbilt University for over 25 years. During her time at VU, she worked in the field of internal audit and then joined the Office of Conflict of Interest and Engagement Management (OCOICM) of the Office of the General Counsel as Program Coordinator.
Terry became a database administrator with the Office of Risk Management and Child Protection in 2016. Erica joined the Office of Legal Affairs in May 2022. As Divisional Counsel, she focuses on regulatory and compliance issues in the healthcare sector. This includes helping VUMC`s compliance team, business development and operations teams, and VUMC subsidiaries identify and resolve regulatory compliance issues. Prior to joining VUMC, Erica was a certified compliance expert with the Denver Health and Hospital Authority, Erlangen Health System, and Jennie Stuart Medical Center. Renee joined VUMC in March 2015 at the Contract Management Office (CMO) and has over eight years of contract experience in the healthcare field. During her six years at OCM, she assisted the VUMC research company with federal research signatures, membership agreements, data use agreements, and professional services agreements. Renee joined the Office of Legal Affairs in July 2021. Camille received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Tennessee School of Law, where she was a member of the Tennessee Law Review, and her bachelor`s degree from the historic Fisk University. Camille is admitted to the bars of Tennessee and California. Bob Rowland is a divisional counsel in the Office of Legal Affairs at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he focuses on transactional and regulatory issues in healthcare. These include joint ventures and other strategic connections, new business development, professional services agreements, general corporate governance issues, advising VUMC subsidiaries, medical practice acquisitions, regulatory and requirements considerations, and contract analysis to comply with applicable health laws.
